Dell Inspiron ” – not able to adjust screen brightness in Mint – Linux Forum –

Go to Solution. I had a problem that my screen was very dark when on battery, ie not plugged in Despite exhaustive searching on microsoft, dell and throughout my computer, I was unable to find a slide bar that nearly every support blog says is there!

Finally, after nearly a year of frustration, my IT contractor told me to do the following: immediately when powering on the computer, begin tapping the Fn F2 key.

Continue this for about seconds until the screen shows up with a brightness bar that you can then adjust. So simple, yet nowhere have I seen this posted. View solution in original post. Find your Service Tag. Thanks, I had a similar problem Latitude E, IPS display, stuck at brightest level and reinstalling the driver in Device Manager solved the problem.

With regard to automatic brightness adjustment, I have also found that to be troublesome on a Windows laptop HP, in my case. The display would slew from bright to dim or vice versa in a few seconds, for no apparent reason. It would be very frustrating to live with that for an extended period of time. I had the same issue and the suggestion to update the driver under Device Manager didn’t work for me it would simply say the driver was up-to-date.

Installing Intel Graphics Command Center and adjusting the brightness from there worked the brightness range goes from to Also, I would recommend to install Dell’s SupportAssist because it found newer updates to the graphics driver that a simple Windows update missed. On windows 10 go to search bar bottom left type in brightness and adjust, setting for brightness is in windows settings.

This worked for me! Dell Latitude E and Nov, I have looked in ‘power’ on the Intel Graphics Control panel and there is very little to change. Nothing for brightness control. I have turned off ‘Enable adaptive brightness’ under display for both plugged in and on battery in the advanced power settings.

Both were already turned off, but toggling them makes no sense. I think I have covered everything that I’ve looked at. If you have any further suggestions I will be happy to try them, but this does not seem to be an isolated thing. A quick search for adaptive brightness on your forum turns up a few threads all asking the same thing, although the last was a couple of months ago. This for example.

Nickname any tip or trick that robert p mentions will not work. This is a feature called “CABC”. Dell does not advertise this feature anywhere but you get to find out about it after buying the laptop after which you have no recourse except to hope that dell releases a fix for it. This same feature exists in the XPS line for which they have released a fix.

They haven’t yet for this laptop, nor there is any communication that they plan to. When I contacted dell I was told that it’s working “as designed” and basically to deal with it. I own the and facing the same issue. Some other poor souls going over the same issue. If you are in a location where they allow returning the laptop, do it before the 30 days from purchase date window closes.

Hi Aniessh Sethh ,. I think I saw some of your responses in other posts but hadn’t seen an update on it for a month or so. I hoped that there might have been some development from DELL since then. Before the brightness change was gradual and less noticeable, but after the update it just steps the brightness when it is changed.

Obviously there is some control available so why not let us turn it off?! All technology seems to be getting worse these days, every upgrade or new device provides more problems than improvements. Or maybe I’m just becoming a grumpy old man! Were you able to find this setting in the “Settings” tool? If so, is it not working for you? Each time you press the keys, the screen gets slightly brighter.

Press the “Fn” key and the “down-arrow” key together to decrease the screen brightness and make the screen dimmer. Press the keys repeatedly to dim the display more.
